English florals, vintage pieces or monochrome stripes — here’s just how the decor styles grace your favourite Bollywood celebrities’ homes, and tips from industry experts on how you, too, can get it right.

Go distressed and vintage, Katrina Kaif style

One look at actor Katrina Kaif’s house, and you’ll notice a soiree of distressed furniture pieces. Be it that chic display ladder, mirror frames, cabinet or candle stand, they all lend colour and character to her abode. “An off-white or beige distressed is a safe option. For a lounge effect in your living room, however, you could in bits and pieces opt for a sea green or bluish green with a hint of brown,” says interior designer Varija Bajaj.

Pastels complement pastels best, so paint your walls in earthy shades. “The vintage vibe looks best when kept natural. So, the space must have a lot of natural light coming in,” adds Bajaj.

Stripe alert, thanks to Sidharth Malhotra

Striking stripes make for a fun part of the interiors of actor Sidharth Malhotra’s home. Interior designer Natasha Kalra says, “Striped wallpapers are big on the decor scene right now. Subhashish Mandal shares a decor tip: “Accentuate such a bold wall with large mirrors or several frames put together.” But if stripes seem too much for the walls, Kalra advises to go for soft furnishing (cushions etc) in stripes and black-and-white checks and patterns. “Mix and match such prints to add more quirk,” she says.

English florals done right like Jacqueline Fernandez

Actor Jacqueline Fernandez’s house has a cozy little space, seems like her reading zone, that has charming English florals meeting the eye. Who wouldn’t want to incorporate that, right? “Don’t go all over with the print. One of the biggest applications of English florals comes in upholstery, but make sure you pick large prints — the roses, paisleys and foliage. If it isn’t large it doesn’t come out beautifully. An ottoman or an easy chair or single seater in florals works well as an accent in the house,” says interior designer and architect Subhashish Mandal. “You can also bring the fabric in a lampshade or cushions for the main solid sofa. The easiest way to add vintage florals to your home is with curtains,” he adds.

More than one billion people risk irreversible hearing loss from exposure to loud sounds such as music played on their smartphone, UN health experts have warned, unveiling new guidelines to help address the problem.

The recommendations to prevent noise-induced hearing loss and related conditions such as tinnitus – commonly experienced as a ringing sound inside the ear - include better functions on personal audio devices that monitor how loud, and for how long, people listen to music.

“Over a billion young people are at risk of hearing loss simply by doing what they really enjoy doing a lot, which is listening regularly to music through their headphones over their devices,” said Technical Officer Shelly Chadha, who works on preventing deafness and hearing loss at the WHO.

The one billion people at the risk of irreversible hearing loss are aged between 12 to 35 years. “At the moment, we don’t really have anything solid other than our instinct to tell us: are we doing this right, or is this something that is going to lead to tinnitus and hearing loss a few years down the line?,” she said.

Today, hearing loss which is not addressed is estimated to cost the global economy USD 750 million, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

“Think of it like driving on a highway but without a speedometer in your car or a speed limit,” Chadha said.

“And what we have proposed is that your smartphone comes fitted with a speedometer, with a measurement system that tells you how much sound you’re getting and tells you if you’re going over the limit,” she said.

A parental volume control option is also included in the UN recommendations to industry, which participated in two years of discussions, along with experts from government, consumer bodies and civil society.

The guidelines also propose using technology to generate individualised listener profiles by monitoring how much people use their audio devices, then letting them know how safely – or not – they have been listening.

“What we propose are certain features like automatic limiting of, or automatic volume reduction and parental control of the volume,” Chadha said.

“So that when somebody goes over their sound limit they have the option that the device will automatically reduce the volume to a level which is not going to harm their ears,” she said.

According to the WHO, more than one in 20 people – 432 million adults and 34 million children – has disabling hearing loss, which impacts on their quality of life.

Most sufferers live in poor and middle-income countries, the UN agency notes, adding that by 2050, more than 900 million people will have significantly impaired hearing.

Around half of all cases of hearing loss could be prevented through public health measures, the WHO insists, its recommendations coming ahead of World Hearing Day on March 3.

“Given that we have the technological know-how to prevent hearing loss, it should not be the case that so many young people continue to damage their hearing while listening to music,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “They must understand that once they lose their hearing, it won’t come back,” Ghebreyesus said. The joint WHO and International Telecommunications Union (ITU) initiative, is an attempt to tackle the lack of awareness about what constitutes too much noise, amid data showing that around 50 per cent of young people listen to unsafe levels of sound through personal audio devices including smartphones, whose use continues to grow globally.

There is finally an end to the wait for seeing Mangal Eri Park (also known as Arignar Anna Park) being revived. The park, which is located at Vellar Street in Mogappair West, will be desilted, a revised cost of ₹65 lakh, according to Zone-7 (Ambattur) officials of Greater Chennai Corporation. The delay is said to have been the result of prolonged negotiations with contractors.

Every day, on an average, more than 2,000 visitors from Mogappair West, Reddipalayam Nagar, Mogappair East, J.J Nagar, Nolambur, Maduravoyal, Collector Nagar and Tirumangalam visit the park. “At many spots around the lake, the steel fencing is damaged, posing a threat to the safety of children. The overgrown grass is not trimmed regularly,” says B. Srinivas, a resident of Mogappair.

Visitors complained that the civic body has not maintained the park properly for a long time. Weeds have grown in the cracks in the compound wall and on the walkers’ pathway, which is around 30ft wide. Walkers, especially senior citizens and children, are apprehensive of walking on the footpath as many visitors have spotted snakes there. Many concrete seating facilities are located amidst the overgrown weeds, making it risky for visitors. The pond located at the centre of the park is in a pathetic situation. More than 50ft deep and its beauty enhanced by the presence of ducks, the pond made for an arresting sight. Now, the pond remains merely a cesspool with stagnant rainwater and overgrown weeds.

It may be noted that a few years ago, Corporation officials had a proposal to develop the facility as a ‘Model Park’ at a cost of ₹1.25 crore, under its general funds. As per the proposal, the developmental work included replacement of the tiles on the walkers’ pathway with granite, 1.5ft high concrete median with space for saplings, desilting and deepening of the pond with steel railings, a yoga and meditation centre, a children’s play area, a pebble pathway and a clock tower.

However, due to the objections raised by residents, the idea was dropped. Residents argued that most of the facilities at the park, including the tiled walkers’ pathway, were in a good condition. As a result, Corporation not only dropped most of the features in the revival project but also stopped maintaining the park regularly. Now, the civic body has decided to deepen the waterbody with steel railings around it.
