Yet rejecting Ms Cooper’s claimed “safety net” against a no deal means concerns over the validity of passports may remain.

After reaching a two month high last week, the sterling exchange rate plummeted following Tuesday’s milestone vote.

Holidaymakers will no doubt have been hugely dismayed as the pound dropped suddenly, against both the euro and the dollar.

The euro fell against sterling from €1.1515 to €1.1451.
